We have gathered our favorite spots around the city to help you explore Stockholm. We also want to take you down memory lane to the bar where we met, had our first date, or loved going with friends. Of course, we did not miss to also include cafés perfect for fika and some beautiful spots just for wandering.
Our Go-To Stockholm Spots:
How to get to the city from Arlanda Airport (if you arrive before):
Arlanda Express : 20 minute train ride to Stockholm Central Station for 340 SEK (≈ 31 €)
Flybussarna : 45 minute bus ride to Stockholm Central Station with multiple stops for 126 SEK (≈11,50 €)
Getting around Stockholm:
T-bana (Metro): The Stockholm metro/ public transport is excellent and will get you almost everywhere you need to go
Single Trips: Just tap your credit card at the gates - super easy!
Multiple days: If you are staying several days, consider getting a travel card through the SL app (different options available)
Don't miss the artwork in the stations, Stockholm's metro is known as the world's longest art gallery :)
Gamla Stan (Old Town): The historic heart of Stockholm with cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and the Royal Palace. Especially beautiful in the side streets away from the main hustle.
Södermalm: The hipster island with the best second-hand and vintage shops, and great views over the city.
Östermalm: A district with beautiful architecture, boutique and high-end stores.
Norrmalm: The modern city center where you will find the Central Station and shopping streets.
Djurgården: The green museum island home to Skansen, ABBA and Vasa Museum, beautiful parks and an amusement park.
Vasastan: Cozy residential area with great restaurants, vintage shops and cafés. Also, the bar where we met is here: good old Hirschenkeller, a german style bar that is really not worth a visit but was part of the pub crawl.
Fika is Sweden's answer to the German Kaffee und Kuchen, except they've perfected it into an actual lifestyle. It is all about slowing down, having coffee and a pastry or cake (sometimes also something salty) and actually enjoying the moment to socialize. Typically, this is the time for a kanelbulle or princess cake.
Vete-Katten: A Stockholm classic that's more than just the grand front room - it's actually a maze of rooms with plenty of seating if you explore further back. Great pastry, one of Charlotte's favorites is their blueberry pastry (Blåbärskrans) if they have them.
Fabrique: Very nice bakery chain with locations throughout the city. Their cinnamon and cardamom buns are very nice.
Drop Coffee (Södermalm): One of Stockholm's specialty coffee roasters. Perfect for coffee lovers who appreciate a perfectly brewed cup (the picture on the left was taken here).
Bageri Norrmalm: A lovely bakery with all the pastry Sweden has to offer. Great spot to grab something on the go, cause there are not many seats.
Lillebrors Bageri: Charming bakery with very tasty pastry and bread.
Komet Café (Södermalm): Cozy spot with great coffee and a relaxed atmosphere.
Restaurant and Bars
During our time in Stockholm, we were on a student budget, but there are still a few places we want to share. Plus Bara Enkelt was the place we had our first date, so if you are up for some cheap beer in a cozy place, this is the place to go (at least back then it was). Max Burger is a true staple and one of the best places to get good (vegetarian) fast food. On our last trip we also discovered some new places that made it on this list.
The place where we had our first date.
No trip to Sweden without a stop at MAX Burger.
Amazing vegan buffet place. Make sure to go there via Katarinavägen.
Very nice place for a beer on a nice summer day.
Very tasty Italien pizza. They have several places in the city but this is the one we always went to.
'Modern' twist on Nordic cuisine.
This is for sure on the pricier side (€€€), but it was very tasty and interesting concept.
We always just went for drinks to enjoy the view, but they also serve food.
Free Walking Tour: Charlotte did this tour a few times and it was always very nice and informative if you want somemore information of Stockholm.
View Points: There are two very nice viewpoints on Södermalm. One is Mariaberget and a bit further down is Skinnarviksberget (Wesley's favorite). If you want a view of Södermalm, you can go out on the other end of Gamla Stan T-Bana Station towards Riddarholmen. This is the place where I asked Wesley if he wanted to marry me.
ABBA Museum: If you ever wanted to perform with ABBA on stage this is your place to go.
Fotografiska: Charlotte's favorite museum. If you like photography, this is a really nice place to go and let yourself get lost in. It also has a very nice coffee place.
Other popular places are:
Skansen: Open-air museum on Djurgården showing Swedish life through the ages.
Vasa Museum :17th-century warship that sank and was recovered. One of Stockholm's must-sees.
(We have not been to these two due to covid. )
Second-hand shopping: Throughout the city there are plenty of great second hand stores. Red Cross and HUMANA were some of my staples and can be found at multiple locations. There is also Siv & Åke, as well as STHLM Grön, that have some special pieces.
Brunnsviken & Haga Park: A scenic lake just north of Stockholm with beaches, swimming spots, and a gorgeous 12km walking trail around it (you can also just walk parts of it). Great for a peaceful escape without leaving the city - accessible by metro (e.g. Universitetet station). There is also a botanical garden with a cute Café. This was our go-to spot since it was close to the student housing. We also celebrated midsummer here!
Vaxholm: Charming archipelago town, about an hour by boat. Perfect for a day trip with cute shops, seafood restaurants, and that classic Swedish island vibe. There is also a bus that goes there.
